Troubleshooting/Support FAQ

After I logged in, the editor opened with the whole web page in it instead of just the content area (Site version).

You may have typed the domain name differently, for example "http://mysite.com" instead of "http://www.mysite.com." Most accounts are set up to require the "www" part of the URL. Either that or you're trying to edit someone else's web page!

A button on the WYSIweb toolbar doesn't work.

There are a number of possible reasons:

  • Are you in HTML mode (looking at code)? Most buttons do not work in this mode. Click the Toggle HTML button again to return to the normal view, then try the tool again.
  • Is the button disabled (dimmed)? Some buttons only work when the appropriate object is selected. For example, you cannot add a column to a table unless the cursor is inside the table.
  • Some functions require input from a pop-up window (or "dialog box"). If you have pop-up blocking enabled in your browser, you will need to allow popups from WYSIweb.com. Don't worry, we don't have pop-up ads on the site! Some other security software or settings may also block pop-up windows. Adjust the settings or disable the software.

Undo or Ctrl+Z doesn't work.

  • Sometimes the change you are undoing isn't visible or immediately obvious on the screen.
  • Sometimes you have to press the button many times to undo the change you want.
  • WYSIweb only remembers the last 20 changes.

If your site's style sheet changes the link colour, that colour will not be visible inside the editor. Firefox always uses blue, underlined text in an editable area, but this will not affect how the rest of the world sees the site.

My browser's Back button doesn't work. (Firefox)

Firefox may have inserted extra pages into the browser history. Use the Back button drop-down menu, History feature or Go menu to find the page you want to return to.

How can I delete an image file off the server?

You can delete, move and copy almost any file using the WYSIweb File Manager (Page and Site versions only).

I accidentally deleted a page (Site version). Can I get it back?

Probably not. However, if you press the Back button soon after deleting the page, the browser may be able to retrieve the page from its memory or cache (try pressing Back a few times if you've done other things in between). If the page reappears (inside the editor), you cannot click 'Save' because the page only exists in your computer's memory -- there is no longer any file name or location for this page stored in WYSIweb's database. Here's how to get around that problem:

  1. Click the Toggle HTML button.
  2. Copy all the code (click inside the editor, type Ctrl+A to select all, and then Ctrl+C to copy).
  3. Click the New Page button or "[Add New]" link to re-create the page, and give it the same name as before.
  4. Click the Toggle HTML button.
  5. Paste the code back in (click on the blank page inside the editor and type Ctrl+V).
  6. Save the page.

I clicked Save but now the page is blank inside the editor. What happened to my page?

There may have been a problem saving to your web server. Do not click Save again while the page is blank. If you have unsaved changes that you don't want to lose, see "Is all my work lost?" below.

I made changes and saved the page, but when I closed the editor the page was blank!

See the next item.

I made changes and saved the page, but when I closed the editor I could not see the changes on the live site.

First, click Refresh on your browser. If you now see your changes, you're done. If not, there may be a temporary problem with a server. If you are using the Page version and you have unsaved changes that you don't want to lose, see "Is all my work lost?" below.

If you don't see your changes after refreshing (or the page is blank), and you are using the Site version, your page was probably saved to the WYSIweb database, but was not successfully transfered to your web server. This was probably due to a lost connection or a problem with the server that is hosting your site. Your changed page will still be there the next time you log in to WYSIweb; try saving it again later.

I clicked Save and got an error.

There may have been a problem with the server that is hosting your site. Try again later or contact us using the form below. If you have unsaved changes that you don't want to lose, see "Is all my work lost?" below.

I clicked Save and nothing happened for a long time.

There may have been network issues or a problem with the server that is hosting your site. Try again later or contact us using the form below. If you ended up on the WYSIweb error page, follow the steps below to try and save your work.

I tried to Save but got the WYSIweb error page. Is all my work lost?

Not necessarily. Click the Back button on your browser until you see your page in the editor again. The browser may be able to retrieve the page from its memory or cache, provided the same window is still open and your session has not timed out. If you see your page again with the unsaved changes, follow these steps to temporarily save your work in another location:

  1. Click the Toggle HTML button to show the HTML code in the editor.
  2. Click inside the editor and then type Ctrl+A to select all the code.
  3. Open Notepad or another text editor (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad). Do not use Word or WordPad.
  4. Paste the code (Ctrl+V or Edit > Paste) into the blank Notepad window.
  5. Save it with a name and in a location you will remember. Use the default ".txt" extension if given a choice.

Later, when the issue has been resolved, follow these steps:

  1. Open the text file you saved in step 5 above.
  2. Type Ctrl+A to select all, and Ctrl+C to copy.
  3. Open your browser to the page you want to replace, click the WYSIweb button and login.
  4. Click Toggle HTML Source.
  5. Type Ctrl+A to select all, the press Delete on your keyboard.
  6. Type Ctrl+V to paste your saved code.
  7. Click Toggle HTML again to return to the normal editor view.
  8. Click Save.
